Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is the 22nd busiest airport in the United States, and the busiest in the Washington-Baltimore region.

BWI Marshall Airport is owned and operated by the Maryland Department of Transportation, Maryland Aviation Administration. The airport is 3,596 acres in size, with a passenger terminal of about 2.4 million square feet with 73 aircraft gates. BWI Marshall has three runways, including two commercial service runways and one general aviation runway. Parking inventory includes about 24,700 spaces in the airport’s parking garages and surface lots.

Sixteen airlines serve BWI Marshall with nonstop service to 91 domestic and international destinations. The airlines offer about 330 daily nonstop departures from the airport. An average of 74,000 passengers fly BWI Marshall Airport each day.

2018 marked the fourth-straight record year for BWI Marshall Airport with more than 27.1 million passengers for the year. Passenger traffic grew by 2.9 percent in 2018.  Cargo shipments also increased, reaching nearly 440 million pounds in 2018.

Southwest Airlines is the largest airline at BWI Marshall Airport. The carrier has a passenger market share at BWI Marshall of 68.2 percent, followed by Spirit Airlines with a 9.2 percent passenger share and Delta Air Lines at 7.4 percent.

The top-five origination and destination markets for BWI Marshall Airport are: Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, Atlanta, Boston, and Los Angeles.
