Summer Youth Initiative

One week. Fifty students. A world of opportunities.

The BWI Marshall Airport Summer Youth Initiative happens each summer, in partnership with Baltimore City Recreation and Parks. This unique program exposes students to a wide range of career opportunities.

The Maryland Aviation Administration, along with industry partners, highlights the inner workings of aviation throughout the week. Students are given exclusive access to help them understand the jobs available at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, one of Maryland’s largest employment centers.

Memorable experiences throughout the week will take place not only at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, but also at Martin State Airport and other transportation-focused sites across our region. Program activities have included observing air operations from the airport control tower, visiting the BWI Marshall Airport Fire and Rescue Department, navigating aircraft via flight simulators, even taking flight in an actual aircraft at Martin State Airport. Demonstrations and presentations will introduce the students to Transportation Security Administration and Customs & Border Protection operations, offer a behind-the-scenes look at airport maintenance equipment including snow removal vehicles and so much more.

This is a life-changing experience for our youth. Learn more or support the program by clicking this link to the Summer Youth Initiative page on the BWI Business Partnership website.

"Bringing the kids out here to the airport -- which has so many great opportunities, successful opportunities, with that exposure -- it allows them to dream and to plan to pursue the airport as a career opportunity."
