March 6, 2020 – Public Workshop Regarding Future BWI Marshall Airport Improvement Projects Set for March 11

UPDATE (3/11/20 at 9:25am): The Public Workshop for the Airport Layout Plan Phase I Improvements at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport Updated Draft Environmental Assessment and Draft Section 4(f) Determination is being postponed due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) transmission concerns. A public notice with a new date for the Public Workshop will be provided as soon as possible and the comment period will be extended. Please visit www.marylandaviation.com for updates and additional information.

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Aviation Administration (MDOT MAA) will host a public workshop this month to provide information on proposed improvement projects at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. The workshop on study documents related to the projects, the Updated Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and the Draft Section 4(f) Determination, will be held 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, in the assembly room of the MDOT MAA offices, 991 Corporate Blvd., Linthicum.

MDOT MAA has identified the need for a number of improvement projects at BWI Marshall Airport. The improvements include: pavement rehabilitation, obstruction removal, terminal improvements, taxiway construction, helipad relocation, construction of aircraft maintenance facilities, vehicle service roadway construction, aircraft firefighting facility expansion, and fire training facility relocation.

The proposed improvements are intended to meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) design standards, enhance airfield safety and efficiency, accommodate existing and anticipated passenger demand, and improve customer service. The proposed improvements in this Updated Draft EA and Draft Section 4(f) Determination would have no impact on airline flight track locations or the number of airline operations at BWI Marshall Airport.

Representatives from MDOT MAA and its project team will be at the public workshop to answer questions from the public. Written comments may be submitted at the workshop, and also may be submitted via email at [email protected] through March 26, 2020. Those requesting communication assistance or accommodation to attend the workshop are encouraged to email [email protected] or call 703-824-5100 prior to the workshop.

MDOT MAA held a public workshop in January 2018 regarding the proposed improvements.  The Updated Draft EA document incorporates public comment responses, additional agency coordination, refined project planning and impact analyses, and an updated aviation activity forecast.

The Updated Draft EA and Draft Section 4(f) Determination is available for review on the MDOT MAA website, marylandaviation.com, at the MDOT MAA Linthicum offices and at the Glen Burnie and Linthicum branches of the Anne Arundel County Public Library and the Savage, East Columbia, Central, Miller, Elkridge and Administrative branches of the Howard County Public Library.
