BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport Sets
New Passenger Record
Airport Reports 21 Million Passengers In 2007 |
BWI AIRPORT, MD (February 07, 2008) - Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley announced today that 21,044,384 commercial passengers flew through Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in 2007. This 2007 passenger traffic figure, an increase of 1.7% over 2006, represents a new all-time record for BWI Marshall.
“The continued growth at BWI Marshall reflects our overriding commitment to customer service,” said Governor O’Malley. “BWI Marshall is the airport of choice for millions of passengers because of the excellent range of air service that our airline partners provide and the fact that Maryland’s premier airport is a world-class facility. Customer satisfaction and security will remain our top priorities in the days ahead.”
Southwest Airlines was the leading carrier at BWI Marshall in 2007 with more than 11 million passengers and 52.5% of the Airport’s market share. Southwest currently provides 172 daily nonstop departures to 38 destinations. Last year was the second time in Southwest’s history that the airline carried more than 10 million passengers at BWI Marshall in a year. Southwest initiated nonstop service to new markets in 2007, including Pittsburgh and Oklahoma City.
“BWI Marshall is a passenger-friendly and efficient gateway for Maryland and the National Capital region,” said Transportation Secretary John D. Porcari. “This record breaking performance in 2007 is a clear sign that BWI Marshall continues to be an important transportation and economic resource for the State of Maryland.”
AirTran Airways, the second largest airline at BWI Marshall, carried nearly 2.5 million passengers in 2007, 16.4% more than 2006. In 2007, AirTran was the fastest growing major airline at the Airport. AirTran’s market share increased to 11.8% of BWI Marshall’s total passengers. During 2007, AirTran added new nonstop service to Portland, Maine and seasonal service to Daytona Beach, Miami, Seattle, and West Palm Beach.
Other airline groups with at least one million passengers at BWI Marshall during 2007 include American, Delta, United, and US Airways. Monthly passenger records for BWI Marshall were set during several consecutive months, from July 2007 through November.
“BWI Marshall provides high-quality aviation services for residents, businesses, and visitors,” said Timothy L. Campbell, Executive Director of the Maryland Aviation Administration. “The Airport is a modern, world-class facility that has been improved and expanded to accommodate future growth. We look forward to working with our airline partners to offer that air service.”
