Governor O’Malley Announces Record Year for Passengers at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport

20.69 Million Passengers Use BWI Marshall in 2006
BWI AIRPORT, MD (February 07, 2007) - Governor Martin O’Malley today announced that 20,698,967 commercial passengers flew through Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in 2006. This figure, an increase of 4.8% over 2005, represents an all-time record for passenger traffic at BWI Marshall.

“BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport is an important economic engine that helps drive the development of Maryland and the entire National Capital region,” said Governor O’Malley. “Our number one goal moving forward is to continue to improve customer service and make BWI Marshall the most convenient airport in the region.”

In 2006, the leading carrier at BWI Marshall was Southwest Airlines, with more 10.69 million passengers. This was the first time in Southwest’s history that the airline carried more than 10 million passengers at BWI Marshall for a calendar year. Southwest has more than 51% of the passenger traffic at the Airport.

“We are fortunate to have an excellent group of airline partners at BWI Marshall,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary John D. Porcari. “These partners, along with our world-class facilities, combine to provide Maryland with one of the premier airports in the United States.”

BWI Marshall’s second leading carrier in 2006 was AirTran Airways, which carried more than 2.13 million passengers, a 10.5% increase over 2005. Last year was the first time that AirTran broke the 2 million-passenger figure at BWI Marshall. Other airline carrier groups with at least one million passengers at BWI Marshall during 2006 include American, Delta, United, and US Airways.

“With the recent completion of a major capital program, we have updated and expanded BWI Marshall to serve our customers for years to come,” said Timothy L. Campbell, A.A.E., Executive Director of the Maryland Aviation Administration. “We have increased the Airport’s capacity and services to accommodate long-term growth.”

North American Airlines started weekly service between BWI Marshall and West Africa in June 2006. Air Greenland will start the first nonstop air service between the United States and Greenland when it initiates flights from BWI Marshall in May 2007.

In 2006, Southwest restored service from BWI Marshall to New Orleans, added new nonstop service to Denver, Detroit, and Oakland, and announced new service to Pittsburgh that will begin in March 2007. AirTran added seasonal nonstop service to Milwaukee, increased service to Charlotte and Dallas/Ft. Worth, and announced new nonstop service to Daytona Beach that starts in February 2007 and seasonal service to West Palm Beach. Delta, Midwest, Northwest, and United all increased service in existing markets from BWI Marshall.

In June 2006, J.D. Power and Associates released a study that ranked BWI Marshall among the best North American airports for customer satisfaction. Earlier in the year, the airport trade publication Airport Revenue News honored BWI with the 2006 award for Airport with the Best Concession Program.
