This afternoon, Island Travel & Tours and Swift Air will start new charter flights between Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and Havana, Cuba. The first flight is scheduled to depart at 4:00 p.m.
“This nonstop charter service will provide easy, efficient access to Cuba for many travelers and organizations throughout Maryland and the National Capital region,” said Ricky Smith, Chief Executive Officer of BWI Marshall. “The nonstop flights have the potential to benefit many institutions in our region.”
BWI Marshall joins a short list of U.S. markets to offer service to Cuba. The Airport received authorization from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in 2011 to handle passenger charter air service to and from Cuba. There are currently 19 airports in the United States that are approved ports of entry for Cuba flights, according to the CBP. Island Travel & Tours is a licensed charter operator authorized to offer the service from BWI Marshall. The charter flights will be operated by Swift Air on Boeing 737-300 aircraft.
BWI Marshall continues to add international service. Havana, Cuba is the latest international destination for the Airport. In 2015, airlines have started service to or announced seven new international markets for BWI Marshall. International passenger traffic increased 52.5 percent in July 2015 to 137,791, a new monthly record. July was also the all-time busiest month for total passenger traffic at BWI Marshall with over 2.36 million passengers.
